Emmaus Road Mennonite Fellowship follows “believer's baptism,” meaning that we baptize individuals who are mature enough to confess Jesus Christ as Lord and who are ready to voluntarily join the community called the church. Believer's baptism keeps us mindful of the necessity for each person to come to faith in Christ. Baptism is not magic. Simply because a person is splashed with water in a church is no guarantee that he or she will become a lifelong follower of Jesus. True salvation involves a transforming work of the Holy Spirit, which results in a life of true repentance, faith, and discipleship (what the early Anabaptists called “regeneration”). Baptism is also not merely a personal testimony to anything that we have done. Baptism speaks, instead, of what God has done for us in Jesus Christ. It is a community sign of the covenant that God has made with His people. God initiates this covenant, not us.
